The position:

We are currently seeking individuals interested in risk analysis to help with country risks work and perform administrative duties including data entry. The position would last for 2-3 months.

Assignments may include:

  • Reviewing and uploading country risks work into the Maplecroft database
  • Carrying out ad hoc research in collaboration with the rest of the team

Relevant work experience is a plus.

Candidates should also have advanced IT skills and demonstrable proficiency in the full Microsoft Office suite.

The role

In 2008, Maplecroft started working with the UN Foundation and the Nike Foundation in their focus on the importance of adolescent girls. Maplecroft subsequently launched the girlsdiscovered.org website. This role has been created to enable Maplecroft to build upon the momentum generated by girlsdiscovered.org and will broadly involve a number of tasks:

  • Regular updating of the girlsdiscovered.org website with new data
  • Thinking about new ways to improve the website
  • Identifying funding sources to expand and build upon girlsdiscovered.org
  • Developing contacts and networking within the girl-expert world
  • Managing a potential new project to expand the website's sub-national data
  • Presenting girlsdiscovered.org at events/conferences

The candidate may also be involved in more general human rights and development related work:

  • The identification, research and analysis of global, regional and country-specific human rights risks
  • The writing of briefings, reports and articles on human rights risk to business relating to countries, companies and sectors
  • Identification of key stakeholder organisations in the area of human rights and business

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have the following experience and skills:

  • The candidate should be numerate with excellent capabilities in the areas of statistics, understanding the limitations of datasets, understanding the limitations of certain data collection methods. Ideally, the candidates should have experience of relevant statistics packages e.g. SPSS, SAS etc.
  • Have advanced excel/spreadsheet skills, and proficient word processing skills
  • Candidates should have a degree in a development-relevant subject
  • Candidates would preferably have some practical experience in the development field, ideally the candidate should have worked on issues affecting adolescent girls and/or be familiar with the issues and debates surrounding the importance of adolescent girls in development
  • The position will require an ability to manage time effectively and work under time pressure. Candidates should be self-starting, innovative and creative and comfortable working in an interdisciplinary, multi-cultural team with formal peer review.

The successful applicant will join our GIS team and contribute to taking our map based products to the next level. The work will involve liaising with researchers, managers and IT team in order to incorporate GIS into our work flow, research and products.

Applicants should have a PhD or masters degree with at least 3 years GIS analysis experience in one or more of the following areas: environment, ecology, health, climate change, water, international development, mining or energy. They should also have strong quantitative analytical modelling skills, a deep understanding of GIS concepts, its implementation and developments in the sector as well as advanced technical IT skills. You will have responsibility for the following:

  • Development of GIS (ArcGIS, MapServer, GeoNetwork) applications to access, query and view spatial data
  • Build and expand existing spatial models (ArcInfo AML, ArcObjects)
  • Administer GIS data infrastructure including meta-data
  • Work with management team and researchers to define GIS application strategies and to develop detailed specifications

You will have knowledge/experience of the following:

  • ArcGIS Desktop and Workstation, and open source applications such as GRASS and R
  • Using Earth Observation data to develop quantitative indicators
  • Scripting experience in a relevant language (such as Python, VBA, or AML)
  • Spatial database design and management (preferably PostgreSQL/PostGIS)

Technical Vacancies

The Software team is responsible for Maplecroft's information delivery infrastructure:

  • managing and developing existing services such as the Global Risks Portal
  • prototyping, developing and deploying new services
  • exploring new technologies and applications
  • developing the data-gathering tools and research database behind all of Maplecroft's services

We are currently looking for software developers to join the team. e.g.:

  • A recent graduate who can demonstrate an interest in, and an aptitude for, software development in any area. Any experience in web development, Python, Open Source and SQL would be an advantage but is not essential
  • A developer with significant experience of server-side web development, ideally in Python though this is not essential.

For either role, experience with any of the following would be advantageous: Django, Apache, MySQL or PostgreSQL, GIS, JavaScript, OpenLayers or similar Open Source mapping library

You will be a passionate and creative interactive designer, with the ability to take a project from wireframe through to final design with a pixel-perfect attention to detail.

  • Cross browser CSS

You will be responsible for:

  • Designing online mapping interfaces

Any experience of working with the Django framework and an interest in data visualisation is also advantageous.

This will require an individual who is a creative self-starter, brimming with initiative and ideas, who can also operate as part of a larger team of designers and software engineers.
