Impact assessment and closure planning
The Maplecroft team has pioneered social and environmental impact assessment since the early 1980s. This includes extensive on-site experience in mining and other extractive operations in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe.
Our approach to impact assessment and closure planning is to both assess and quantify potential impacts (positive and negative). Potential impacts and baseline information are scored and indexed consistently on a scale of 0-10. This enables a clearer evaluation of possible mitigation scenarios as well as effective benchmarking and transfer of knowledge and programmes of work into the operations and projects phases.
Case study
Planning for closure
Maplecroft employees have worked with the extractives sector since the mid 1970s. This has included in impact assessment, policy development, assurance, corporate reporting as well as planning for closure.
In 2008, we were engaged to design a socio-economic planning for closure framework for an extractives company based in Namibia. The work focused primarily on future socio-economic activities that should be undertaken to mitigate the loss of revenue post mining e.g. training, re-skilling, alternative livelihoods projects, social investment and enterprise development activities etc.
Maplecroft derived a risk identification and measurement framework with six workstreams of activity. Each of the activities was linked to departments, individuals and existing corporate budgets. The project also delivered a proposed management structure and monitoring mechanism that was linked to production status and product prices; thus linking closure timelines to real-time profitably of mine.
